CONFERENCES
"It ismyprivilegeand greatpleasure to invite you toESTRO37 thatwill takeplace 20-24April2018 inBarcelona,Spain"
ESTRO is a society focusingon interdisciplinarity andmultidisciplinarity, giving radiation oncologists, medicalphysicists, radiobiologists, brachytherapists and radiation therapists (RTTs) theopportunity to engagewithother oncologyorganisationswith the collective aimof improving cancer treatment.
The interdisciplinary componentof the scientificprogrammewill include sessionson the following topics: •Breast and toxicity •Lung anddose escalation •How tominimise toxicity inpelvicmalignancies in the eraofprecision radiotherapy • Immunoradiotherapy: the critical influenceof radiationdose, scheduling anddoseper fraction •Oligometastaticdisease, treatment for cure? •Automaticplanning.Ablessingor a curse? •Applyingdose-responsemodel across radiation modalities: tumour control and side effects •Paediatriconcology •Particle therapy •New imaging approaches for radiotherapy •Radiomics •Radiogenomics •Designing clinical trials in radiotherapy in2020 •Partialorgan treatments tominimise late radiation effects •Patient involvement, shareddecisionmaking, patient-centred care • Implicationsof the agingpopulation for radiationoncology •Challenges inhuman resources in radiotherapy •Salvage radiotherapy
This conferencewill convey the theme ‘Innovation forvalue and access’.
Highlighting the fact that radiationoncology is an innovativedisciplinewhich is rapidly evolving,we remain consciousof the fact that the strive forbetter andmore accurate andprecise treatments shouldgohand inhandwith the effort toprovide increased equal access to radiation therapy, atboth theEuropean andglobal level, and to a substantialnumberofpatients. Themessagewewould like to conveywith this theme is that innovations in radiationoncology donotonlyhave apositive impacton thevalue ofour treatments, but thatwe can alsouse the technological (e.g. automation, efficiency) and radiobiological (e.g.hypofractionation) advances to serve an evergrowing subsetofpatients.

Ihave always foundESTRO coursesvery helpful and eagerlyparticipate in them each year, including theoneheld in Japan lastyear. Thanks tomy improvedunderstandingof radiationoncology, this coursehasbecome more interesting andhelpful forme than it waswhen Iwas a residentphysician.Thisyear, the course focusedongastrointestinal cancer. After completing the course, ayet-unanswered question regarding anal cancer intriguedme, forwhich I intend tofind an answervianew research. Why are theseESTRO courses sohelpful? The teachers arepioneers in thefieldof radiation oncology and areopen todirectquestions.
Hearing about their experiences is always fascinating and encouragesmy interest in the field. I amproud tobe able to tellmyother doctor friends that Ihad a chance tomeet and talkwithdoctors such asVincenzoValentini, MarcelVerheij andClaudioCoco. It is a humbling experience tobe in thepresenceof these eminent scientists, andyou learnmore thanyou can from simply reading textbooksor publishedpapers. It is really inspirational and makesmewant tobecome an excellent radiation oncologist like them. The courses arewellorganised, and the speakers convey information in a systematic and easy-to- understandmanner. In fact, inmyopinion,

Themajorityofparticipants came from Germany, although therewerepeople attending from alloverEurope, including staff from the InternationalAtomicEnergyAgency (IAEA) in Vienna,Austria. Theoverall aimof theworkshopwas to “todefine future challenges anddirectionswithin the scope ofmetrology forbrachytherapy”.The intention was toprovide amultidisciplinary forum for the exchangeof information, ideas and expertise
in thefieldofbrachytherapywith experts from metrology, medicalphysics, radiationoncology, radiobiology aswell asvendors. Inparticular, theworkshop aimed to cover the “current statusofbrachytherapy in clinics andhospitals, quality assurance, calibration services and the current and futurepotentialof technological improvements andmedicalphysics innovations”. Theworkshop fulfilled itsobjectivesverywell withpresentations ranging from covering detailed levelsofprimary calibration standards to clinicalhands-on applicationsof real-time
