Anatomical Definition: Heart • Heart has four chambers: The atria are receiving areas that pump blood into discharging chambers called the ventricles • Heart and the roots of the great vessels lie in the pericardium, which is located in the middle mediastinum. • Heart has a base (posterior aspect), apex (inferolateral end), three surfaces (sternocostal, diaphragmatic and pulmonary) and four borders (right, inferior, left and superior)
