Initial studies utilizing hyperfractionated radiation therapy with total doses up to 72 Gy (1 Gy twice day) suggested a modest improvement in survival of children with brainstem gliomas compared to radiation alone, and compared to radiation with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy Packer et al. 1993

However, subsequent trials using radiation doses up to 78 Gy did not confirm this finding Packer et al. 1994
