Some early responses have been:

“I had not thought about that showing my daughter the everyday treatment could be such an eye opener for her.”

“Seeing that movie with my children made it much easier to talk about where I go every day, now where we live so far from the hospital.” RTTs have explained: “I really looked forward to the material getting finished – it was so much easier to start a dialog with the patient, we sort of had a frame to talk in.”

Conclusion We have systemised the workflow in the clinic for children as relatives to patients in radiotherapy, to empower the parents to engage the children in their treatment. 4 tools are developed and implemented. In the future we plan to monitor the outcome of this intervention through a questionnaire for the parents and through interviews of RTTs. Initial response is very positive.

Purpose or Objective Purpose/objectives:

In April 2021 the radiotherapy department in the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle (CIC) became a satellite centre to the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) in Newcastle.

The merger included the provision of 2 Varian Truebeam linacs with IGRT capabilities which were new to the radiographers in Cumbria.

One of the greatest challenges for NCCC was providing radiographers with training in the associated site specific IGRT competencies used at NCCC, especially given the small number of patients that would be treated at the Cumbria centre.

A fast-track approach taken to deliver these competencies between two geographically separate sites is described here.

With NHS England’s national roll out of SABR, this training was more imperative to make it available to more patients locally.

Materials and Methods Materials/Methods:

With the merger of the two radiotherapy departments in North Cumbria and Newcastle, IGRT training has been provided for CIC by radiographers at the NCCC.

CIC Radiographers would travel to NCCC and spend a week training on a linac so as to maximise their exposure to a high
