RAPTOR project: Verification
Jacob Brunner

Abstract:
Due to the distinctive depth-dose curve characterized by the Bragg peak, particle therapy is especially sensitive to set up and anatomical variations. Particle therapy can therefore likely benefit even more from online and real-time adaptation than photon therapy. However, the particles’ characteristics require different solutions and accuracy standards for the processes and algorithms involved. RAPTOR, a consortium supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020, is dedicated to advancing online and Real-time Adaptive Particle Therapy of cancer (RAPTOR). With 15 PhD projects spanning Europe, RAPTOR focuses on refining treatment adaptation processes covering imaging, intervention, and verification. The Work package 4 of the RAPTOR project focuses on treatment verification . It includes developing, evaluating and translating methods for independent dose delivery verification for adapted treatment plans considering the whole online-adaptive loop. Patient-specific phantom QA is not possible in a real-time adaptation scheme keeping the patient in treatment position awaiting dose delivery. Therefore, the ESR team of WP4 is working on different aspects of treatment verification as a safety net or detection system in the online-adaptive treatment workflow. The five ESRs dedicate their research to various topics: (1)Prompt-gamma technology is investigated to detect deviations on the anatomical level to identify and classify clinically relevant deviations and to quantify the dose for adaptive planning: (2) Proton radiography is employed for real- plan adaption (3) Quality assurance is tackled by projects on automated and fast machine and delivery log-file based QA and the development of an end-to-end test workflow for all RAPTOR real-time adaptive PT components. A brief overview of the ESRs, their projects and the supervisors associated with WP4 can be found in figure 1. The talk will briefly present the aim of work package 4 and then dive into the individual projects providing insight into reached achievements and present recent developments.
