Sexual support and survivorship in prostate cancer

Abstract:

Background:

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of nearly all prostate cancer treatments. Radiotherapy, androgen deprivation therapy and prostatectomy all result in high levels of physical and psychosexual problems. Research has shown men with prostate cancer do not receive the help they need to deal with these issues, and unmet need persists.

Aims:

This presentation will aim to characterise men’s experience of sexual side effects associated with prostate cancer and its treatment. It will also critique current levels of support and proposals for best practice.

Discussion:

Historically, research into the side effects of prostate cancer treatment has tended to focus on urinary, gastrointestinal and erectile dysfunction. However, other sexual sequalae are wide-ranging and distressing. Penile dysmorphia, climacturia, anodyspareunia, anejaculation and anorgasmia are all common. Men also report low libido,
