ESTRO 2024 - Abstract Book
S112 ESTRO 2024 Regarding optimal type of surgery after chemoradiotherapy data from randomised trials show a convincing advantage in terms of less complications and quicker functional recovery after minimally invasive (conventional or robotic), compared to open surgery. For this reason, minimally invasive surgery can be recommended following conventional neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Regarding salvage oesophagectomy no randomised data are yet available and no firm recommendations regarding surgical approach can be made. Invited Speaker

Survivorship and the role of the MDT in breast cancer rehabilitation post-radiotherapy
Karen Patrice Molan
Bon Secours Radiotherapy, in partnership with UPMC Hilman Cancer Centre., Radiotherapy, Cork, Ireland
Abstract:
In the Republic of Ireland (ROI) the cancer survivor population has surged by 50% in the past decade, reaching 215,000 in 2021. This remarkable progress is attributed to advancements in early detection, treatment options, and ongoing research. While overall survival rates are improving for most cancers in ROI, significant strides have been made in the more common cancers, such as breast cancer. Currently, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 80%. Cancer survivorship is now recognised as a crucial and distinct stage of the cancer experience. As individuals transition from being "cancer patients" to "cancer survivors," there's a critical need to raise awareness among patients, healthcare professionals, and caregivers about the importance of holistic recovery and life beyond cancer, which requires to be integrated into patient care by all health care professionals. Ireland’s latest National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026 identified support for patient survivorship as a priority. The improved survival rate for many cancers in high income countries demands a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to survivorship care and service provision to ensure optimal patient outcomes and quality of life.
This talk will delve into various aspects of survivorship, including:
Defining survivorship
•
• The diverse roles of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) members in breast cancer rehabilitation • The importance of the role of the radiotherapy community in survivorship care • The role of preventive measures and screening in survivorship • Current strategies for supporting survivors. • Barriers and challenges faced by survivors in accessing support. • Addressing misinformation and disinformation surrounding breast cancer • Exploring current and future solutions and directions for effective survivorship care
