and skin (N = 3). Of the 33 patients, 21 (64 %) had tumors that were genetically related. Twelve patients (36 %) had no shared genetic relationship between their primary HNSCC and the presumed distant metastasis.

Conclusion:

Approximately one-third of patients with suspected distant metastases from HNSCC lack a genetic relationship with the primary tumors. This implies a substantial risk of misclassification, potentially inflating the reported incidence of distant metastases for HNSCC.
