Moffitt Cancer Center, Radiation Oncology, Tampa, USA

Purpose/Objective:

Concurrent systemic therapy and radiation therapy (CRT) for locoregionally advanced oropharyngeal cancer can be an intense treatment, and hospitalization for adverse events is common. We sought to examine demographic, tumor, treatment, or dosimetric parameters that were prognostic for hospitalization during a course of CRT.

Material/Methods:

After IRB approval was obtained, a database of head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy was queried. Patients treated with curative intent CRT for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were included. Demographic, tumor, and treatment factors as well as mean doses to delineated organs at risk from radiotherapy plans were abstracted from the chart and treatment planning systems. Hospitalization was defined as admission to hospital or stay in an emergency room/urgent care for > 24 hours during or within 90 days post treatment. Associations with categorical variables were tested via Fischer exact test and with continuous variables via independent samples T test. Potential prognostic factors for hospitalization were entered into a binary logistic regression multi-variable model.
