Conclusion:

Data quality of recorded toxicities following radiotherapy for lung cancer was reviewed at our centre. Good quality data was found for 61% of patients, but manual review of patient notes or further patient contact was required for the remaining cases. The use of a rigorous algorithm for reviewing patient notes manually ensures the consistency of data recorded. However, since symptoms associated with radiation pneumonitis are not specific there is a risk of under/over-reporting of such side effects. Improving the quality of available toxicity data is vital to the successful use of real-world data to drive improvements in radiotherapy.
