When considering the preferred place of care over 60% expressed a preference to remain at home or with family throughout the weeks. Few individuals (4%) desired to reside in a care home or hospice. Across the 12 week study period a smaller proportion of patients were hospitalised in each group; at week 1, 50% of patients in both groups were alive and hospitalised; by week 12, this percentage had decreased to 13% in the 8Gy/1f group and 11% in the 20Gy/5f group. By 12 weeks there were a number of missing data but of those evaluable 77% were cared for at home or by relatives, the remainder being in a care home, hospice or hospital.
Conclusion:
Survival in patients with MSCC is associated with better physical functioning and reduced survival is predicted by fatigue, dyspnoea and appetite loss. No difference was seen in HRQoL between the multifraction and single-fraction groups across the 12 week study period. Most patients with MSCC prefer to be cared for at home or by relatives which is achieved by around three-quarters.
