Conclusion:

In conclusion patients receiving 10 fractions have a median OS of 4.3 months, and this probably justifies RT for most patients. Patients treated with 4 or 5 fractions have a poor median OS of 1.7 months and it is more uncertain that RT will be beneficial for the patients, as the effect of whole brain RT only appears after 4-6 weeks. The eldest quartile of patients had the poorest survival, it is important to consider age when selecting patients for whole brain radiotherapy. Probably half of all the patients should never have had treatment. Despite increasing knowledge that frail and elderly patients do not benefit from whole brain RT, this abstract show that it is still important to discuss patient selection for palliative whole brain RT.
