Results:

In total there were 24,754 patients with lung cancer entered into the analysis. During the study period, the annual number of patients undergoing radical radiotherapy varied by NHS Trust from 12 to 822. Across the four financial years 2018/19 - 2021/22, the English average crude 90-day mortality rate after radical radiotherapy fluctuated between 4.7% and 5.3% following radical/adjuvant radiotherapy for lung cancer. The crude 90-day mortality rates by NHS Trust varied from 0% to 18.5% for 2021/22.

23,794 patients treated with radical/adjuvant radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (2018/19 - 2021/22) were included (excluding Trusts with known data quality issues). There was wide variation in the yearly number of patients included in the analysis by NHS Trust, with the volume of patients ranging from 24 to 437. The national average crude 90-day mortality rate fluctuated between 2.0% and 2.7% during the 4-year study period and varied between NHS Trusts from 0% to 6.9% in 2021/22.
