Figure 1. Kaplan-Meier analysis for absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) in week 3 for overall survival.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrates that the absolute lymphocyte count in week 3 of CRT for esophageal cancer (at a threshold of 0.5 x103/μL) is the strongest metric for radiation -induced lymphopenia to distinguish survival outcomes. Hence, endeavors to improve on the metric ALC week 3 could be aimed for in lymphopenia-mitigating strategies and future trials, with the ultimate goal to improve survival.

Purpose/Objective:

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation (NACTRT) followed by surgery has been established as the standard of care in locally advanced operable carcinoma esophagus (1). This approach has resulted in better pathological complete response rates and survival outcomes without significantly increasing surgical morbidities or treatment-related mortality.
