Interdisciplinary - Education in radiation therapy
ESTRO 2024
Conclusion:
The pilot study of the BRIDGE project showed differences in definitions and quantitative clinical information contained in severity grades of AEs relevant for Gyn-RT using different CTCAE versions. An increasing number of radiotherapy clinical trials have morbidity as main endpoint. In order to assess, report and compare morbidity accurately, awareness of these differences is vital to minimise misleading or wrong conclusions. This also has consequences on the development or validation of predictive models for morbidity, and not least, risk communication to patients.
Keywords: clinical trials; morbidity reporting; evidence

Are Non-Western Countries and the Southern Hemisphere Underrepresented in Medical Terminology?
Ali Karimi
University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, USA
Purpose/Objective:
Many medical terms are named after scientists, some examples include Parkinson’s Disease, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Edwards’ Syndrome, etc. Similarly, many medical terms are named after patients, some examples include Lou Gehrig’s Disease, John Cunningham Virus, Tommy John Surgery, etc. While the origin of the name of individual medical terms is almost always known, the naming of medical conditions collectively is not very well researched. Disparities between Western vs. Non-Western countries and the Northern vs. Southern Hemisphere are well researched, yet, to the best of the author’s knowledge, there are no previous studies on whether individuals from non-Western countries and the Southern Hemisphere are underrepresented in the naming of medical terminology. The most representative source of the medical terminology that medical students encounter in their medical education is the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 book as it is the most popular resource used by medical students.
Material/Methods:
All the medical terms in the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 were searched in the literature to determine if they were named after someone. That person’s biography was then used to determine that individual’s nationality which was classified by hemisphere and geo-cultural category.
