Whilst an internationally accepted medical physics certification program is the ultimate aim, a regionally focused certification is currently more feasible and allows individual countries greater control and ownership of their profession. This allows LMIC medical physicists much needed ‘validation’ of their skills and value within the clinical setting and improves their professional recognition with national authorities.

Implementing photobiomodulation as supportive care activity in an oncology-radiotherapy center

Camelia Billard-Sandu

Gustave Roussy, Oncology-Radiotherapy, Villejuif, France

Purpose/Objective:

Photobiomodulation (PBM), LED/LASER therapy by red or infrared wavelength of light, is increasingly applied in supportive care in oncology-radiotherapy. Its main clinical effects are healing, analgesic and anti-inflammatory. MASCC/ISOO recommend the use of PBM in the prevention or treatment of oral mucositis induced by radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of action and dosimetric parameters of PBM have led to the emergence of other oncology-related conditions that could benefit from PBM: radiation dermatitis, xerostomia, radiation fibrosis, trismus,.osteoradio/chemonecrosis, peripheral neuropathy, lymphedema, post surgery or radiotherapy nociceptive pain and palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia.

In ordere to decrease the severity of radiation induced toxicity in head and neck, anal el pelvic cancer patients, we implement the therapy by photobiomodultation in our institut.

Material/Methods:

We have defined the main steps required for developing the PBM activity in the oncology-radiotherapy department in Gustave Roussy,: 1) Evaluating the major needs from all PBM indications; 2) Estimation of PBM activity in the department; 3) Identification and training of personnel that will be involved in PBM practice; 4) Define the consultation space and equipment needed for PBM treatments; 5) Define the schedule of PBM activity so that patients can have a minimum of two sessions per week; 6) Creation of a patient booklet; 7) Valorization of the PBM activity as a medical consultation; 8) Implementation of a national multidisciplinary consultation meeting; 9) Development of clinical and translational research We create the OncoLum by Gustave Roussy, center of treatment, training and research by PBM in Oncology. Between May 2020 and October 2023, we acquired five PBM devices with intra and extra-oral application in the prevention or management of oncological therapies sides effects. Our PBM clinical activity is listed in the table 1. An information brochure for patients was written and validated with the institutional comity of patients and is delivered to all partners centers. The French ministerial authorization to delegate PBM activity to paramedical personnel was published in May 2022; since then radiotherapy technicians and nurses are involved alongside physicians in the PBM activity. We organise a University Diploma in PBM (Paris-Saclay Results:
