While this bibliometrics study will be used to validate the proposed categorisation system, further discussion, involving stakeholders from within and beyond the broad radiation oncology community, is needed to propose minimally required endpoints and evidence for appropriate appraisal and implementation for different types of radiotherapy interventions.

Common Sense Oncology: a global movement back to outcomes that matter

Purpose/Objective:

While there have been substantial improvements in cancer therapies, in recent years there is growing recognition that many new cancer treatments are associated with small clinical benefits. Parallel to this is the widening gap in global access to fundamental cancer care. The Common Sense Oncology initiative was launched in 2023 to tackle these fundamental challenges in our field. In this session we will introduce the Common Sense Oncology (CSO) initiative, describe objectives and guiding principles, outline short- and medium-term goals, and discuss the strategic approach for stakeholder engagement.

Material/Methods:

The inaugural CSO planning meeting in April 2023 brought together 38 global experts in oncology, including patient advocates, oncologists, stakeholders, editors, journalists, and regulators, in Kingston, Canada. The formalization of the initiative involved articulating the fundamental principles of the CSO approach, defining goals, formulating an action plan, and disseminating guiding principles.
