Figure 2 : Comparison of AI vs. Analytical methods for ten test cases, 17 vertebrae, for a total of 1020 landmark detections: statistically significant performance differences noted in T3, T4, T6, T8, T9, and T12 (p < 0.05).

Conclusion:

Two automated techniques for detecting vertebral landmarks in paediatric CT images were developed and assessed. The U-Net-based AI landmark detection method demonstrated superior accuracy compared to the analytical scripted image analysis approach. The study underscores the value of U-Net-based methodologies in advancing paediatric vertebrae growth measurements, addressing the challenges presented by the time-intensive nature of traditional manual methods. This work will facilitate the development of normal vertebral growth models from retrospective image data. Furthermore, it will enable the evaluation of post-radiotherapy growth impacts and improved dose response models for radiation-induced growth defects in paediatric radiation therapy patients.
