Once every VFSS was completely labeled, we extracted seven dynamic parameters from the videos and compared each parameter between pathological and healthy groups with a student t-test. This analysis revealed statistically significant differences (p-value < 0.05) in the opening of the upper esophageal sphincter, the elevation of the hyoid bone, the maximum movement of the posterior pharyngeal wall, and the amount of bolus remaining in both the epiglottal and esophageal areas before and after swallowing. Statistically significant differences were also observed in almost all the dynamic components, including the times required for deglutition, opening of the upper esophageal sphincter, elevation of the hyoid bone, and closure of the pharyngeal light. Figure 2 compares three parameters that characterize a single deglutition between a healthy subject and two different patients presenting dysphagia, showing evident differences in the metrics.
