Conclusion:
Range shifters have been shown to (a) reduce the beam ranges while maintaining a maximum spot size change within tolerances in presence of the MF. In addition, RSs provide a practical solution to (b) account for large air gaps by improving beam quality in terms of spot size and eccentricity at reduced ranges of higher-energy beams. When modulating higher-energy beams, the optimal range shifter thickness should be evaluated according to delivered energy and intended range and the distance to the target object should be minimized. Future studies aim to validate results by examining the impact of range and positioning uncertainties and to characterize dose spot properties at the distal fall-off.
