Purpose/Objective:
Electron therapy effectively treats superficial tumors by protecting underlying tissues. Electron beams are often shaped using custom cutouts that are fabricated based on manual tracing of the contour drawn on the patient skin. The traditional manual tracing method, though prevalent, can be labor-intensive, time-consuming and error-prone. To overcome such limitations, an optical image-guided automatic method, flashing automatic contour tracing (FACT) has been developed. Combining a CCD camera with specialized software, FACT automates contour capture and cutout preparation, aiming for increasing accuracy, efficiency, and reliability.
Material/Methods:
A GoPro HERO4 Session camera (with a wide 80-degree field of view and 5-megapixel resolution), connected to an electron applicator using a 3D-printed holder, was used to capture high-definition images of the original contour. Two contour images were taken at two different heights by placing the camera on two different spots of the applicator. Then the appropriate magnification was acquired using projection geometry principles, as shown in Figure 1.
