Purpose/Objective:

Non-invasive lung tumor motion tracking on the sequential kilovoltage (kV) X-ray images acquired during treatment can facilitate accurate delivery of stereotactic body radiation therapy treatment for lung cancer. Yet, it requires reliable identification of the tumor target on these extremely low contrast and noisy X-ray images. The goal of this study is to develop a transfer learning deep segmentation net jury committee (TL-DSN-JC) algorithm to extract the lung tumor targets on these images for more accurate motion tracking in the radiotherapeutic management of lung cancer.

Material/Methods:

600 radiographic images from 71 early stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) were retrospectively selected in the study. The images were acquired as the kV setup orthogonal images using the on-board imager mounted on the Varian 21iX Clinac (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA).
