Purpose/Objective:
Treatment plans must be reviewed before delivering the dose to patients as a safety measure. The analysis of the dose-volume histograms (DVH) of organs at risk (OARs) and target volumes is a simple and effective strategy, but sometimes is an exhaustive and laborius task when the numer of volumes is high (head and neck or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) plans). In addition, several data and parameters of the plan must be verified, which involve a repetitive work and a significant loss of time [2]. The Eclipse (Varian Medical System) treatment planning system (TPS) provides an application programming interface (API), Eclipse Scripting API (ESAPI), which offers to users the possibility of creating computer programs (scripts) through an interface that explores treatment plans information. The aim of the study is to implement a computer application for the automation of dosimetric analysis and verification treatment plans in order to get easier these tasks, to save time in the radiotherapic process and to reduce the human risk factor as much as posible.
Material/Methods:
The ESAPI is used by creating Plug-in-Scripts or scripts, which are executed from the Eclipse session, giving acces only to the data of a specific patient.
The script is implemented in C# programming language and uses the libraries, classes, subclasses and attributes of the Eclipse Scripting API Help guide [1]. The script atuomates the verification check-list of treatments used by physicists in our department, which inclued tasks must be reviewed. The script is organized into different sections [3]:
A. Header: set of libraries to use ESAPI ( MS.TPS.Common.Model.API and MS.TPS.Common.Model.Types ) are loaded
B. Main body: functions created to automatize the steps of the treatment verification checklist:
1. To read notes or messages with information for patient’s treatment 2. To open MLC (Skin-Flash) for breast plans 3. Correspondence of patient name with TC images and treatment course 4. Origin of coordenates of the plan 5. Dose prescription
