RTT - Patient experience and quality of life

ESTRO 2024

A total of 142 participants were included across three studies in this review. Study interventions were heterogeneous. There was heterogeneity across the studies in relation to definition, implementation and measurement of the prehabilitation interventions. Broadly, several classifications of prehabilitation existed across the studies including pelvic floor muscle training 10,12 aerobic and resistance training 11 . Methodological quality of each study was favourable. Across studies, outcome measurements included urinary and faecal continence, quality of life, functional capacity and fatigue. Prehabilitation may reduce incidence of urinary and faecal incontinence 10,12 . Two studies observed a reduction in fatigue 10,11 .

Conclusion:

The heterogenous nature of interventions, outcome measures and their measurement is a significant limitation of the study. Prehabilitation interventions may help to allieviate radiation therapy-related toxicities of the pelvis and support pelvic floor muscle strength, functional capacity and quality of life.
