Purpose/Objective:
Climate change is a natural phenomenon that has global implications [1]. It is said that even a 3-degree rise in global temperature compared to pre-industrialization levels can have catastrophic consequences[1-3]. Health care accounts for 4.4% global net emissions [4]. India contributes to 7% overall emission, 2% to healthcare’s global footprint and is ranked 7th as healthcare climate footprint contributor [5]. Radiation oncology is a cornerstone of cancer management. More than half of cancer patients will require radiation therapy (RT) during their illness. The plethora of machines, gadgets, and devices in a radiation oncology department and the personnel can leave a significant carbon footprint. As a radiation Oncology community, we need to have recommendations and formulate our carbon footprint policy. There are three steps to creating a policy- 1). Find out the quantum of carbon emissions. 2). Measures that we can take to minimise climate change and 3). Post-implementation assessment of our measures. This study, focussing on the first two steps, is a step towards increasing carbon footprint awareness in the radiation oncology community.
Material/Methods:
Our center, is an advanced radiation oncology setup with a linear accelerator (Varian Truebeam version 2.7) and includes a brachytherapy unit (Varian Gamma Med Plus HDR), eclipse treatment planning system (TPS v.15.6) workstations and Citrix paperless solution. With regard to human resources, we have a total of 15 personnel in
