The impact of moderate hypofractionation on costs and travel burden in breast cancer patients

Purpose/Objective:

Developing countries are still facing difficulties caused by the limited number of radiotherapy machines. The department of Oncology at the University Hospital Mother Teresa is the only public center in Albania that irradiates breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of moderate hypofractionation on the costs of breast cancer treatment in a middle-income country like Albania.

Material/Methods:

We analyzed the numbers of breast cancer patients treated between years 2011-2016 using normal fractionation (50Gy/25fr) and 2017-2022 using moderate hypofractionation (40Gy/15fr) and the costs of radiotherapy treatment based on the costs of the CT-simulation, treatment planning and number of fractions. Travel distance and transit time from their home to hospital were also analyzed and calculated using Google Maps. Hospitalization costs for patients who stayed in the hospital during irradiation were also calculated.
