Conclusion:

Radiotherapy contributes significantly to 5-year survival, being delivered to almost 40% of patients overall. However, in those tumour sites where RT is delivered to appreciable numbers of patients (>5%), the average rate of RT use was higher, at just over 50%. This emphasises the importance of RT. The comparatively high numbers of patients with haematological cancers who received RT (around a quarter) were notable. The high percentages of patients with most individial tumour types that are treated with RT show the need for multi-disciplinary teams including radiation oncologists, together with adequate modern treatment planning and delivery. The low numbers of patients with some tumour types who received RT implies that multi-disciplinary decision-making is available in these teams and that RT has value to these few patients.

This 50% figure for RT use in tumour sites where RT has a numerically significant role is important and is contrary to popular perception. It is critical for service planning and public health messaging.
