Conclusion:
The choice of host city for an ESTRO congress can have a large impact on the travel carbon footprint with differences up to 37%. If all delegates in Europe travelled via train this could save 19-36% compared to current travel habits, highlighting the importance of train travel. The majority of the travel footprint stems from long-haul flights, and therefore digital attendance by non-European attendees could reduce the travel carbon footprint by up to 80%. Alternatively, international hubs could save 56%. In future work the Google Maps API will be used to improve the train travel estimates.
