Fig.1: Mobile application workflow
The mobile application featured separate sections designated to address the needs of caregivers and the child (Fig.2a). The caregiver's section included information about the application, the radiotherapy department, and the availability of support services. The child's section aimed to encourage personalization by providing the opportunity for the child to create their own profile by adding their name and selecting their favorite pet to guide them through the hospital. After creating a profile, the child could select 2 tabs, "My hospital" and "My journey" (Fig. 2b). The "My hospital" screen provided the child with information about the various hospital wards and treatment rooms in a child friendly manner (Fig. 2c). The "My journey" screen consisted of 2 screens; "My schedule" and "My feelings". In the "My schedule" screen, the child could visualize the number of completed radiotherapy sessions and obtain rewards for each of the completed sessions, while in the "My feelings" screen, the child could select an emoticon to indicate their emotional state and choose to communicate this with an adult (Fig. 2d). At the end of the treatment, the child received an electronic certificate to highlight their achievement (Fig.2e).
The final prototype resulted in a mean SUS score of 86, which indicates that the prototype is nearly ready for deployment.
