In the Posicast study from Houweling et al. (2010) the AP translation is slightly larger than the other directions. This corresponds with the results from this study. The closed and open face DSPS showed overall a slightly better performance than the Posicast.
Conclusion:
In general, small interfraction and intrafraction motions were observed for the DSPS system in head-and-neck cancer patients. The interfraction setup variation was overall slightly larger for the open face than for the closed mask, while the differences for the rotations and intrafraction motion were small. As setup translations are online corrected before treatment delivery, the setup translations are clinically not relevant. Comparison with the Posicast mask with individual head support indicates that the DSPS showed overall a slightly better performance (Houweling 2010). In conclusion, the DSPS open face mask gives comparable positioning stability as the closed mask. The preferred option to implement in our department is the open face mask because of the comparable stability and the patient friendly character.
