Purpose/Objective:

Larsen was a kind, sensitive and super intelligent five-year-old. In 2019, he was diagnosed with a medulloepithelioma of the optic nerve. Larsen endured 11-hour brain surgery, numerous side effects and infections, 6-weeks of radiotherapy and two rounds of high dose chemotherapy, before dying as a result of the toxicity from chemotherapy. Larsen’s Pride is a charity established in his memory that aims to improve the lived experience of children <12 years undergoing brain tumour treatment. Larsen’s, and our experiences as parents, are a key driver behind the work of the charity. From the outset, it was clear that improving the lives of children during radiotherapy would be our first big project. For Larsen, and our family, radiotherapy was a time of comparable respite to the other treatments. Larsen accessed radiotherapy awake, rare in four/five-year-olds. This allowed him to go to school, see friends and live at home rather than hospital. We believe all children with brain tumours - with a potentially terminal diagnosis - deserve this opportunity.
