RTT - Patient experience and quality of life
ESTRO 2024
Results:
Preliminary analysis revealed 4 key themes for patients completing or declining to take part in PREHABS iincluding:
• Psychological distress and ability to cope with diagnosis and treatment • Value of PREHABS options • Resources available • Prior experience of lifestyle adaptation
Patients that completed PREHABS
Eighteen patients that completed PREHABS agreed to take part in a feedback interview between October 2022 and June 2023. Of those
7 completed an interview (1 with carer present, 4 male, 3 female)
• 4 declined to take part to the research team (2 no reason, 1 wife had died and did not wish to be interviewed, 1 too ill) • 1 patient did not pick up at scheduled interview time. • 3 patients no reply with 3 contacts • 3 numbers not available
Patients that declined PREHABS
Seven patients (3M 4F) who declined to take part provided brief feedback to radiographers/ research team. All declined a feedback interview as they were worried about diagnosis and treatment.
Characteristics of patients
Table 1 compares the characteristics of those that had consented to take part in PREHABS and those that declined. Those that completed PREHABS and agreed to an interview had a positive mindset. This enabled them to cope with diagnosis and focus on specific goals. For most of the time they were able to put the worry about their diagnosis and treatment to the back of their minds. Those interviewed were happy to try suggestions from the clinical team and “give it a go”.
“the fitter you are the better you are” (650259)
As long as you can do it then take part” (650261)
Theories of change around self-monitoring, self-regulation and self-care were confirmed, as they were able to set goals and monitor their own health. They had high levels of motivation, resources (money and time), a preference for a healthy lifestyle and previously made adaptations.
