ESTRO 2024

The ten interviewees were working across the UK (Figure 1) and were from a range of therapeutic radiography activities including, research and development, clinical, and digital technology. Interviews ranged between 45 and 63 minutes. The codes were reviewed and grouped into themes which formed three categories:

Previous training

Need and rationale for training Competence and autonomy

Previous training

Participants spoke at length about how previous training had affected their experience of working towards competency. Both positive and negative experiences were described and the impact on own practice and future.

“When I started at my first centre compared to this one, it was different in terms of image matching, if you had something standardised to begin with and at a national level, it would save you having to redo it every time you move departments, and means you are more consistent” Clinical practice was stated as the preferred method because it was most reflective of clinical working, but the importance of supplemental methods that solidified knowledge including simulation was stated. The use of assessment, review, and audit was also discussed by participants.

Need and rationale for training

All participants stated efficient training and clear outcomes of programmes were important. This included staff being able to understand and apply training to clinical scenarios. Participants mentioned the need for a well-designed training environment that isn’t limited by time and departmental resources.

"If you can get some clinical hands-on training fed into programs… that's quite tricky practically, but if it's available, I do think there is a benefit to it”
