Conclusion:
EI and empathy are crucial for RTTs as they support patients along their treatment path. The scores reported by this study suggest that undergraduate RTTs possess low to moderate levels of EI and empathy which varies minimally throughout their degree. This is supported by findings in similar degree cohorts of undergraduate healthcare students surveyed during the same period. Findings suggest that, in certain circumstances, patient-centred empathy skills show a more pronounced development with increasing undergraduate experience compared with EI. These results emphasise the importance of incorporating EI and empathy training into the curricula of health science programs to enhance these essential skills required in workforce-ready graduate RTTs who can provide emotionally supportive care and promote a patient-centric focus in their practice.
