RTT - Service evaluation, quality assurance and risk management

ESTRO 2024

Calculations of the current “FTE RTTs deficit” and “additional FTE RTTs required” were done using equations 1 and 2, respectively.

The current Belgian RTTs workforce has a 20% deficit, lacking an estimated 113 FTE RTTs. Furthermore, an increase of 20% in annual RT treatments is expected in Belgium by 2025, according to the KCE report. This means that in 2025, the required number of FTE RTTs will be approximately 574 - and this probably does not account for an increase in the complexity of RT techniques that necessitate a larger RTT workforce. Therefore, the actual deficit will undoubtedly increase with time, unless actions are taken. Regarding RTT workforce initial diplomas, nurses (range 41-100%) are the majority in 24 RT departments, while medical imaging technologists (MIT, range- 1-30%) are present in 15 RT departments. Five RT departments have a considerable amount (40-50%) of MITs in their team, while three RT departments have an all-nurse staff. Concerning academic degrees, 21 RT departments have Bachelor's degree holders (range 41-100%), while only 11 have Master's degree RTTs (range 1-10%). Eighteen departments have postgraduate certificated RTTs (range1-40%) and 8 reported 1-20% of RTTs with professional/secondary course (e.g. nurses A2).
