Coronary arteries exposure in VMAT versus 3D conformal radiotherapy for thymic epithelial tumors

Purpose/Objective:

The aim of this study was to compare coronary arteries exposure in VMAT versus 3D conformal mediastinal radiotherapy for thymic epithelial tumors.

Material/Methods:

Patients referred for mediastinal irradiation for thymic epithelial tumors RT between 2017 and 2022 were included in this study. Coronary arteries, including the left main (LM), left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCx) and right coronary artery (RCA) were retrospectively contoured using the Duanes’ cardiac atlas. Two treatment plans were generated for each patient: 3D conformal plan and VMAT plan, using two different treatment planning systems: Monaco® 5.1 and Eclipse® 16.1, respectively. Both plans were optimized to meet target volumes coverage objectives and OAR dose constraints. Dosimetry metrics to coronary arteries were assessed in each treatment plan and statistically compared between both techniques using the t paired test.
