New PET tracers for evaluation of radiation-induced normal tissue toxicity

Abstract:

Normal tissue toxicity is typically assessed based on a description of symptoms, anomalies visible on scans or measurements of values from lab tests. Imaging has the benefit of being in vivo, non-invasive, objective, and providing spatial information, making it the obvious choice when assessing the regional variation in tissue response. Anatomical imaging is, however, insufficient for evaluating many important aspects of toxicity. Instead, a quantifiable measure of decrease in organ function is desirable. Nuclear medicine imaging techniques show promise, since they by principle are functional modalities, using radioactive pharmaceuticals to map physiological processes. FDG, being the most ubiquitous PET tracer, has been used to evaluate radiation induced toxicity in many different normal tissues. However, it isn’t always the best choice due to contradictory effects on uptake. Often, other tracers exist that may be better suited to the organ being investigated. In this presentation we will briefly discuss some of these alternative tracers, including FLT PET for bone marrow and 4D V/Q PET for lung function, focusing on PSMA PET for salivary glands. Subsequently, we will also explore the effect that proton LET has on PSMA uptake within the glands.
