Purpose/Objective:

Meningiomas account for approximately 30% of all primary intracranial tumors. Most meningiomas are benign; 20% are atypical WHO grade II; <5% are WHO grade III. The role of radiotherapy (RT) in the treatment of resected atypical meningiomas (AM) has been controversial, while there is general consensus that RT has always a beneficial role in the adjuvant setting of anaplastic meningioma (ANM). We sought to examine the role of RT for AM and ANM in the adjuvant setting at the University of Florence (Unifi).

Material/Methods:

Patients diagnosed with AM and ANM treated with RT or initial observation at Unifi from 2009-2022 were identified and retrospectively analyzed. Patients were graded and diagnosed utilizing the WHO 2021 grading system . Data on age, gender, clinical onset, surgical type, radiation dose and modality as well as a wide array of histological features (brain invasion, bone invasion, number of mitosis (/10HPF), proliferation index [ki-67], necrosis) were investigated. Estimates of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were performed using the Kaplan Meier (K-M) method.
