Fractionated proton radiotherapy appears to be suitable for the treatment of schwannomas of various anatomical origin. Our data suggest acceptable preservation of nerve function with normofractionated proton radiotherapy. Appropriate patient selection is essential to identify the patients who benefit most from proton radiotherapy.

Purpose/Objective:

Pituitary adenomas are generally treated in our institution with Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery (SRS), with good results [1]. In case of large pituitary adenomas or in proximity of optic pathways [2], patients are referred to fractionated radiotherapy (FRT). In this study we evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments performed with alternative radiation techniques other than GK for large adenomas, when there is a significant risk that the dose to optical structures might exceed its tolerance.
