Abstract:
The landscape of radiation oncology is rapidly evolving, presenting Radiation Therapists (RTTs) with exciting opportunities to expand our roles and shape the future of cancer care. This panelist presentation explores emerging career paths for RTTs, with a focus on clinical academic careers and their synergy with technological advancements in our field. Building on the insights from other panelists regarding RTTs' adaptability, leadership, and research, this presentation will cover several key areas: 1. Clinical Academic Pathways: To examine how combining clinical practice with research and education can drive innovation and evidence-based practice in radiation therapy. 2. Technology Integration: To explore how RTTs can position themselves at the forefront of technological developments. 3. Personalized Medicine: To discuss the growing role of RTTs in tailoring person centred treatments 4. Leadership and Innovation: To explore pathways for RTTs to move into international leadership and entrepreneurship roles. This presentation aims to inspire RTTs to envision and pursue these innovative career paths. By embracing these opportunities, particularly in clinical academia, we can enhance our professional growth while significantly contributing to improved patient outcomes and the advancement of radiation oncology practice.

Abstract:
Research led by Radiation Therapists (RTTs) holds immense potential to enhance patient care and drive innovation within the field of radiotherapy (RT). As frontline professionals, RTTs possess unique insights into treatment protocols, clinical workflows, and patient outcomes. Their active participation in research offers a practical, clinically informed approach that bridges the gap between patient care and scientific inquiry, ultimately improving treatment methods and advancing our understanding of clinical practice. This talk will explore the significance of RTT-led research in radiotherapy, emphasizing the key factors that contribute to successful outcomes, including strong leadership, a clear research vision, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Successful research requires dedicated protected time, resources, and streamlined processes that integrate seamlessly with clinical workflows. Effective communication and planning throughout the research process are also essential to ensure success.
