Interdisciplinary – Education in radiation oncology

In most countries, radiation oncology education is integrated into the medical school curriculum. Educational sessions are provided in all or selected institutions in 10 countries (71%), while clinical rotations are available in all or selected institutions in 9 countries (64%). Radiation oncology residency programs are available in every country with a national accreditation authority. National authorities for radiation oncology licensure are present in all countries. Fellowship training programs are available in 7 countries (50%). Continuing medical education credit systems are implemented in most countries; 57% compulsory, 29% optional and 14% not required. In professional development, responders’ perceived challenges are ranked as follows ( Figure 1 ): lack of time (21%), occupational burnout (20%), lack of learning tools and infrastructures (18%), lack of mentorship programs (17%), financial issues (14%), and discrimination against gender, ethnicity, or religion (10%). Most countries organize a national radiation oncology conference annually (79%) with 36% available online access. One country includes non-academic sessions such as communication skills at the national conferences.

Conclusion: There is a variation in radiation oncology education and resources across Asia. The potential developments that FARO can prioritize the collaborations are the introduction of radiation oncology in medical school, standardization of licensure and promotion of professional development among member countries.
