For patient travel, the median and mean distances travelled per visit (one-way) were 17.5 km (interquartile range (IQR) 7.89 – 35.2) and 29.1 km, respectively. The differences in distance travelled between centres located in large and small cities were not significant (p=0.88). The median total distance travelled per treatment course was 637 km. To estimate CO 2 e emissions, we assumed that each patient drove an average British petrol car. This resulted in a median CO 2 e emission of 171 kg per treatment course and 9.76 kg per treatment visit. Figure 1 shows the distribution of patient travel distance by centre.
For staff travel, the median and mean distances travelled per visit (one-way) were 10.0 km (IQR 9.5 – 14.8) and 12.0 km, respectively. Data was available on travel modalities per staff member, which allowed a more accurate calculation of CO 2 e emissions. The median CO 2 e emissions per patient caused by staff travel was estimated to be 44.5 kg (IQR 34.2 – 55.0). Figure 2 shows the distribution of staff travel distance by centre.
