ESTRO 2025

32% (n=192) said that they dislike online conferences but there was large support for ESTRO offering further digital options with 79% of respondents agreeing that ESTRO should offer digital participation. This has the potential to reduce the carbon impact of conferences by reducing travel with the additional benefit of improving accessibility for those that would otherwise be unable to engage with the conferences. When asked what they considered to be barriers to reducing flying for work-related trips, the most popular response was ‘It takes too much time’ (82%, n=503). However, 50% of respondents (n=268) are prepared to travel more than 6 hours by train to an ESTRO conference to reduce their carbon footprint and 29% (n=158) are prepared to travel more than 8 hours by train. Figure 1 shows the locations accessible within 8 hours of train travel from for e.g. Vienna.

The majority of respondents agreed that ESTRO should ‘Increase engagement with manufacturers around environmental sustainability’ (82%, n=523) and ‘Offer digital participation in conferences and meetings’ (79%, n=505). Figure 2 shows the percentage of respondents that ‘Strongly agree’ or ‘Agree’ that ESTRO should be doing the options given in response to the climate crisis.
