There were 56 internal (INR) and 32 external (EXR) referrals in the pilot group. Results and definitions are summarized in table 1. Removing the “RO triage” step led to a statistically significant reduction in the average referral triage time by 84% and 63% for our EXRs and INRs, respectively. ROs’ and RCs’ feedback were positive, and no increase in error rate was observed.
Conclusion This project suggests that it is feasible to remove ROs from the referral triage process for a majority of referrals (e.g., 50+% for HN). Efficiency and stakeholder satisfaction were increased without negative outcomes. Main project limitation is the small sample size. HN site group adopted this QI change as their standard practice at the end of the pilot. To assess sustainability and scalability, pilot was run on the Breast- and Genitourinary- sites with preliminary positive results observed.
