Conclusion In our study, the majority of the patients were of squamous cell carcinoma, in contrast to the Western world, where adenocarcinoma is more common; most patients presented with advanced stages, and just two-thirds had undergone treatment. Moreover, the planned treatment was completed by just one-fifth of the cohort. The majority of the patients defaulted due to a lack of awareness about the nature of the disease, financial reasons, and a need for a robust multidisciplinary system. This reflects the actual situation of a government-funded hospital in a lower middle country such as India. Our study emphasizes a dire need to increase awareness among people about the nature of the disease and its management strategies so that patients present in the early stages and complete their treatment with good compliance.
