The dosimetric results obtained using fraction-variant VMAT treatments are summarized in Figure 2, as a function of the number of different plans generated. For all patients, fraction-variant treatments achieve better target coverage and reduce the dose to critical OARs compared to the corresponding fraction-invariant treatment. In addition, 1-arc and 2-arc fraction-variant treatments can approximate (or even outperform) the dosimetric quality of the original 3 arc fraction-invariant treatment, while significantly reducing the delivery time per fraction from 180 s to 60 s and 120 s, respectively.
