values discriminated patients with toxicity beyond the best performing absolute EUD (from Dose-Surface Histogram, n=1 for incontinence/diarrhea, n=0.1 for proctitis).
In the higher EUD range (75th-percentile, EUD>45Gy for incontinence/diarrhoea, EUD>60Gy for proctitis), AUC from EUDs were 0.62/0.57/0.53 for incontinence/diarrhoea/proctitis, and 0.69/0.72/0.60 when using t-values.
Conclusion: The Functional-Discriminant Approach overcomes the reduction of the dose distribution to the DVH/DSH (which loses spatial information) and should be investigated further for other endpoints/cancers. On the considered population, the Functional-Discriminant Approach demonstrated that for late rectal toxicities, the spatial distribution of high-doses is more informative than the quantity of dose received.
