Conclusion: In rats the combination of the ACE-inhibitor Captopril with the PH medications Ambrisentan and Sildenafil effectively reduced radiation-induced loss of cardiopulmonary function even when heart and lung were both irradiated. This combination of medications is a promising intervention to prevent cardiopulmonary side effects in patients treated with thoracic radiotherapy, improving their quality of life and possibly even survival.
