RTT - Patient experience and quality of life

ESTRO 2025

Material/Methods: In a mixed method study, virtual consultations with an experienced RTT replaced in-clinic initial consultations for patients with head and neck or lung cancer. The RTT recorded the duration of the consultation, any technical issues and the quality of patient interaction. Patient satisfaction was assessed via a questionnaire and additional interviews with five patients. At the first radiotherapy treatment, the RTT evaluated each patient’s readiness to begin treatment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: A total of 45 patients and 46 relatives participated in the virtual consultations, with 43 sessions conducted via video link and two by telephone. Of the 42 patients who completed the questionnaire (fig.1) 38 felt comfortable with the virtual format (84%, fig 2) and 40 would do so again (89%). The RTT reported positive and productive interactions with patients and relatives though eight consultations (18%) encountered technical issues such as sound, image or connectivity problems. In 40 cases (89%) the first radiotherapy treatment was completed within the scheduled time. Interviews further indicated that video consultations were suitable for initial consultation, effectively prepared patients for treatment and allowed safe information sharing in the comfort of their own homes.

Conclusion: The positive outcomes of this study led to the continued use of virtual start-up consultations beyond the project’s end date, with plans to expand to additional patient groups. The ability to complete treatments on schedule, combined with preparations led by an experienced RTT, contributes to a better working environment, enhances treatment quality and care, and ensures improved patient safety.
