RTT - Education, training, advanced practice and role developments

Conclusion: There are about 174 training institutions for RTTs in Latin America. The name of the RTT identity in Latin America varies with “Técnico”, “Tecnólogo Médico”, and “Licenciado” being the most common titles. The length of training is diverse and variable, and radiotherapy-specific training is universally limited. Efforts are needed to incorporate radiotherapy rotations as a mandatory component of training for RTTs, since this is usually not present.

Nienke Weitkamp, Claire van Vliet, Miguel A Palacios, Cassey Glebbeek, Daphne Damhoff, Anna M.E. Bruynzeel Radiotherapy, AmsterdamUMC, Amsterdam, Netherlands Purpose/Objective: Online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy (MRIgRT) involves daily adjustments for targets and organs at risk (OAR), ensuring high-precision radiotherapy but requiring continuous presence of an radiation oncologist (RO). Training radiotherapy technologists (RTT’s) to adjust the target themselves could improve the efficiency. We report on the training program enabling RTT’s to safely and efficiently perform online adaptive MRIgRT for prostate cancer patients, including adjustment of the target and plan review. Material/Methods: A training program was designed by an RO and a senior RTT. The RTT’s involved in MRIgRT treatments received background knowledge concerning prostate cancer, including tumor staging, anatomy and treatment planning evaluation. Additionally, in the schooling was discussed how the adjusting of the target contour, the prostate, is performed. Contouring was then practiced with offline and online cases. RTT’s performed the adjustment of the target of at least five offline cases which consisted of a baseline and first-fraction MR-scan of real prostate patients with different levels of difficulty. The target contour of the baseline scan was included and then adjusted to simulate
